About FPE panels

Why Federal Pacific panels get replaced

Federal Pacific Electric panels were common in homes built from the 1950s through the 1980s. Their Stab-Lok breakers have a long-reported history of failing to trip under overload, which is exactly when a breaker needs to work.

Because of that history, many insurers and home inspectors now treat FPE panels as a replacement item. A new panel removes the question entirely.

Not sure what you have?

Look for “Stab-Lok” on the breakers

Federal Pacific panels usually say FPE or Stab-Lok on the label or the breakers. If you’re not sure, text Byron a photo of the panel door label and the open panel. He’ll tell you what you have and what replacement involves.

How to tell

Signs you have a Federal Pacific panel

  • “Federal Pacific Electric” or “FPE” on the panel cover or door label
  • “Stab-Lok” printed on the label or on the breakers
  • Breakers with a red or orange stripe across the handle
  • A home built roughly between the 1950s and the 1980s

A finished panel, with permits and inspection

This is what you get at the end of a Federal Pacific replacement: new equipment, clearly labeled circuits and a permit that’s been signed off.

Byron coordinates the shutoff with your utility and keeps the outage as short as possible.

Questions

Common questions

Don’t see yours? Text Byron. You’ll get a real answer from the person doing the work.

Text a question
Is a Federal Pacific panel dangerous?

FPE Stab-Lok breakers are widely reported to fail to trip under some overload conditions. Many homes have had them for decades without incident, but it’s a known risk, and many insurers now require replacement.

Can I replace just the breakers?

Replacement breakers exist, but they don’t change how the panel is viewed by insurers and inspectors. Replacing the panel is the fix most insurers accept.

How much does an FPE replacement cost?

Most are standard panel replacements, starting at $4,400 for a 200-amp panel with permits. Byron confirms the exact price before work starts.
